Skin redness maybe caused by many things including sunburn, sun damage, allergic reactions and rosacea.
Although there are many causes for skin redness – most are the result of genetic and environmental factors. Environmental factors that can affect redness include sun exposure, smoking, irritation of the skin, certain medications and medical conditions – such as eczema and psoriasis.
Broken Capillaries & Spider Veins
Broken capillaries, also known as spider veins, present as thin red to purple lines, generally centralised around the nose and chin. Broken capillaries may be caused by long-term sun exposure, weather changes, hormonal changes in pregnancy, injury or trauma to the skin, alcohol consumption and/or genetic predisposition. Capillaries may also become permanently visible as a result of repetitive flushing of the skin. The blood vessels just below the skin surface become more visible as they dilate. These vessels become weak and lose their natural elasticity, thus preventing them from shrinking back to their original small size. Broad Band Light (BBL™) Skin Rejuvenation is the world leading technology when it comes to the treatment of facial broken capillaries and spider veins.
Rosacea
Rosacea is an inflammatory condition that can present as diffused redness, frequent blushing/flushing, broken capillaries and acne like lesions depending on its severity (or any combination of some/all of these features). It is more likely to be present in fairer skin types and often becomes evident between the ages of 30-60 years old. Rosacea tends to affect the face centrally; in severe cases the nose can become red and swollen.
Rosacea is categorised into four different grades. Lower grade rosacea presents as diffused redness and the more severe forms of rosacea also cause swelling of the nose and red, irritated eyes. Common causes of rosacea flare-ups are alcohol, hot drinks, spicy foods and overly hot showers. Lifestyle routine should include taking note of the factors causing flare-ups and avoiding these things if possible.
If you are concerned with any form of redness, being protected from the sun is vital. We recommend daily application of broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen and use a skincare routine that incorporates vitamins A, B and K. Other options for treating rosacea include medications (either oral or topical creams/ointments) and Broad Band Light (BBL™) Skin Rejuvenation.
Eczema
Redness on the face and body can also be caused by skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema. Eczema is most likely to present on areas of the body such as the elbows and knees. It presents as red, itchy, dry and flaky areas and its causes are not completely understood. Eczema can be managed with topical treatments and light therapy such as Healite II LED Light Therapy.
