Acne is a common skin condition with many causes and triggers. It can affect people of all ages (not just teenagers!). Most of us have experienced acne at some point in our lives and the anxiety & embarrassment is all too familiar for some of us. Acne is inflammation which occurs around hair follicle and it’s associated oil gland. Acne can be present on areas such as the face, neck, décolletage, back and arms. It is categorised by the number and type of lesions. There are several causes for acne – genetic factors, impaired skin barrier, hormonal factors, polycystic ovaries, stress, medications, excessive dairy products and certain cosmetics. As there are many factors that can cause and exacerbate acne, treatment can only be effective if all these are taken into consideration. Some acne can be treated with a prescribed home skincare routine and regular in-clinic treatments. Other more severe types of acne such as cystic acne or hormonal related acne will likely require medical intervention. Our biggest word of advise is to begin treatment of acne as soon as possible to prevent/minimise scarring – all acne can be managed with the right treatment approach.
When treating acne, it is important to have to correct balance of active ingredients to target the lesions, as well as soothing and protecting products to prevent damage to the skin. Treatment may include oil balancing products, creating a healthy exfoliating routine, lowering the presence of skin bacteria, addressing lifestyle factors and balancing hormones. Congestion
Congestion in the skin is a build-up of oils and old skin cells on the surface of the skin. This often presents as blackheads, blocked pores, blemishes and dull skin tone. Skin can become congested for a variety of reasons including excessive oil and sebum production, issues with normal exfoliating process of the skin and use of unsuitable products (or no products at all). When targeting congestion, it is important to use a high quality at-home skincare routine that incorporate gentle yet effective exfoliants and Vitamin A to maintain a healthy skin cell turn over. These products help to gently remove the old layer of skin and encourage youthful skin. Please note, when using these products, you must also be using a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily as the newer skin is more vulnerable to sun damage. Other treatment options to treat acne and congestion includes customised COCO Medi-Facials, Broad Band Light (BBL™) Forever Clear and Healite II LED Light Therapy.
